PROJECT OVERVIEW

Have you ever stood amidst the broken cliffs of a majestic mountain range? Looked to the top of the high peaks? There is nothing that will insight more emotions, more wonder than that. The humility of standing amongst something so grand feeling small surrounded by the natural giants. The motivation of being so close to the top you can taste it. Since 2015 when my team and I got turned around near high camp, I have looked on from town at that great mountain peak of Denali. I have been driven and inspired ever since. When the opportunity to attempt the summit came up, I readily volunteered. I was offered the chance to be the assistant team leader and to take on the responsibility of leading one of our three rope teams. Leaning on the wisdom and experience of our team leader we will make our way to high camp and attempt to make the summit. At all times maintaining the safety of our team.

Amidst the towering peaks we will test our metal and through focus and dedication we will try our dreams.

Learning Goals and Outcomes

Through leading and assisting with the teams I will strive to learn the importance of inter-team composition and leadership while meeting training objectives such as:

1. Safely expose the team to mountaineering and maximize training opportunities while in the  mountain environment.

2. Improve the team’s ability to operate proficiently and confidently in the mountain environment, gain knowledge of operational equipment and logistical planning, master winter camping and glacier travel skills, and understand personal physiology at altitude.

3. Exercise team-based risk mitigation, critical thinking, and inclusive decision making through open team discussions.

4. Improve understanding of high altitude medicine and mountain weather.

5. Reach at least high camp at 17,200 feet.

Outdoor Significance

By traveling, working and living in the alpine mountain environment we will learn the importance of safety in and respect for these mountains. Every year thousands of climbers attempt to summit this great peak. As we learn how to do so in a clean and responsible way we can continue to maintain and enjoy this amazing environment without destroying it for future generations.

Professional Development

I have recently finished my team leader upgrade at work. Allowing me to lead a team for rescue work across the state and the world. This will be a big opportunity for me to co-lead a major expedition with some of our brothers from different units across the country. The idea from leadership is that if this trip goes as well, I will be able to lead the next team trip.
